Website Hosting - Who Should Provide Your Website Hosting?

Who should you turn to for website hosting? There are hundreds of website hosts available; some will be in your area, some in the same country and others will be overseas. The actual physical location of the host is not as important as the services they can provide. Because most of your interaction with them will be online, one provider in another state or overseas might be just as good or better than a local provider.

The factors you’ll want to consider are:

1. The speed of their internet connection:

This may not seem relevant, but a website hosting service which has a T3 link, that is to say they can provide 5GB of upload speed, means their websites are potentially faster to load on your visitors browsers than a website that is running on a 56K line.

2. The amount of space they provide for your website:

Many website hosting services offer space in the range of gigabytes. Most small businesses never come even close to using this much space. However, if your website wants to use audio or video the amount of space you need may well exceed 1GB. If you know the size of your site before you shop, great. Make sure you get enough space. If you are going to have someone else design the site, get an idea as to what sort of space you need before you determine your host service.

3. Other services they include with your website:

Every website hosting service will have a variety of other services they include. Some will design your website for you; this may be more costly but could add to the convenience of one source for all your website needs. Does the host provide transaction processing (the ability to sell things on your website should you need to)? Does the host have secure servers if you want to create a login area for members only? Can you get your domain name registered through them? And with your order do you get sub domains? Do you get email addresses to use with your website, and if so how many?

Get a list of several website hosting services and compare the various features. Determine which of these features are most important for your website and this should help guide you as to which host is best for you. In the end, you are paying for the service you should be sure you get one that’s right for you.
